Hello everyone! Between school and teaching, I've been working on a series for gallery work these past few months. From 12/20-12/24 this work will be up at Ceres Gallery in Chelsea, with a reception night on the 22nd from 7-9pm--swing on by!

Hello All!
Sorry for the lack of updates; It's been a great and busy past couple of months. My 2nd children's book, Evelyn Sylvan and the Curse of the Magical Tree Stump, is now completed and available at the Barnes and Noble web-site!

The story deals with bullies--their actions and how they treat others, interwoven with fantasy, drama, and humor. At the end, it's the power of true friendship that saves the day!

Evelyn Sylvan is the most popular girl in school-but she's also a bully. One day, a magical tree stump that imprisons cruel-hearted individuals gets a hold of her!
Join Evelyn as she embarks on the journey of a lifetime to free herself from the stump's curse as she learns the true definition of what it takes to be a real friend.

New York Cares, Colorado Mountain Ranch, and NAEA Seattle, oh my!

(Hello again after being away for so long! I've been working on some gallery work and on a project, but can't show/say anything until we get the green-light, so hopefully more exciting news within a couple of months! I've been getting many opportunities to travel and meet some great people and institutions:)

New York Cares: I got the chance to meet the great kids of Jennie A. Clarke Residence in East Harlem and got to be a part of their Bedtime Stories activity session! (Please click on the link to go to the NYCares blog page to read what happened!) Afterwards, the kids made and gave me thank you cards--a wonderful night and experience!

Colorado Mountain Ranch: My friend (and talented artist) Devin Scannell invited me up to see the CMR--I was floored! CMR is run by a trio of caring/selfless individuals: Mike, Lynn, and Gail. They hold summer programs for youths in the mountains of Gold Hill, CO (please see the link for more info). Last summer was very tough for them as a wildfire destroyed most of the CMR property (as well as countless of homes in that area). The trio, along with the help of the townspeople, volunteers, and contributors, are rebuilding the site better than ever! NAEA: The National Art Education Association's conference in Seattle, WA was my first NAEA conference and was a blast! Some of the top art educators and researchers (such as Olivia Gude and Judy Burton), as well as scientific/environmentalist/artist innovators (like Mark Dion), were in attendance giving insightful lectures and presentations. The conference was only 3 days long, but it was jammed pack! Next year, the NAEA comes to NYC!

A couple of days ago, I had the opportunity to see a screening of the first half of ...In the Woods, a film by Jennifer Elster. It has an interesting premise to it: individuals take a walk in the woods and journey within their souls and psyche.

Fleeting Memory

We tend not to remember every single minute detail; sometimes the most peculiar (or important) things stand out apart from the rest within our memories.

This piece went through quite a bit of revisions; from the construction of the background to the shape of the body of the main figure.
My experience working and exploring upon this painting was a pretty funny metaphor to what the piece meant to me--that 'otherworldly' fleeting/changing aspect of one's memory.

Here's the last revision I had before finally arriving to my finished piece:

I wasn't all too happy with the shape of the body of the figure--it didn't have the graceful/flowing personality to it that I had envisioned (I did my best to change that for the final version of the piece). The background also didn't feel too cohesive for me--so I added the yarn strings and vertical piece of tape. I have my reasons for why I applied these little changes to the piece, though I want to keep the meaning open to all of you :)

Here is where this piece all started:

a simple watercolor semi-portrait of one of my pals. I happened to paint it on this discarded piece of bristol paper. What started out as just a sketch/practice painting, ended up being a rather interesting piece of work to me. The concept of the fleeting aspect of time and memory grew from here...

I explored my view of the traditional Indian Widow; a life held by constraints and the rules of their society. Perhaps it is an environment that one can escape...

Here's a look at the process this piece went through from the sketch on the board to the final (minus the red background and yarn):

Red just seemed like the right choice for the background--to bring an intensity; a metaphor for the glare of society that the widow character may be feeling enforced upon her
